OUR ROOTS
The Little Free Pantry on Skokorat was established on July 4, 2020, in response to the significant rise in food insecurity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our primary goal was to offer an additional resource for our neighbors struggling to put food on their tables. We firmly believed that our grassroots, crowd-sourcing approach would complement existing local services, such as the Seymour Oxford Food Bank.
Since its inception, the Pantry has expanded its mission to include organizing, advocacy, and education. We have also broadened our footprint by adding a larger pantry, little free library, community garden, and an apiary.
At the Pantry, we believe every individual deserves access to quality nutrition, regardless of their financial situation. We also believe food should be readily available, which is why we have a 24/7 distribution model. The Pantry has remained open through all weather conditions, including blizzards and tropical storms. Although we've faced challenges, such as a broken door, we have never allowed these obstacles to hinder our commitment to food accessibility.
We are incredibly grateful for the support of numerous local partners who help us better serve our community. However, the true heroes of The Little Free Pantry on Skokorat are our AWESOME community members, who not only help stock and supply the Pantry but also help create an environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
We like to say that our Pantry runs on SMALL ACTS OF KINDNESS. Each food item that arrives here is a product of love. That is why the Little Free Pantry on Skokorat represents much more than just filling a wooden box with food; it embodies neighbors helping neighbors through daily acts of kindness, love, and generosity. The strength of our community is what allows the Pantry to thrive.
